California 2023 Summer P-EBT Program
On April 10, 2023, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved California’s Summer 2023 Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) State plan for school-age children.
This plan aims to provide additional assistance to eligible households during the summer months.
Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) is a program that provides electronic food benefits to eligible families with school-age children.
The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) will begin mailing Summer P-EBT cards between Sunday, July 16, 2023, and Wednesday, August 30, 2023.
These cards, distinguishable as P-EBT 4.0 cards, will be mailed to the address maintained in the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Database (CALPADS).
For the Summer 2023 P-EBT period from June 2023 through August 2023, each eligible child will receive a set benefit amount of $120.
To learn more about California Summer P-EBT benefits for 2023, including eligibility requirements, the application process and frequently asked questions, read our California Summer P-EBT 2023 article.
California SSI Recipients can get CalFresh
Beginning Summer of 2019, those receiving SSI/SSP are eligible for CalFresh, provided they meet all other SNAP eligibility requirements.
If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you can get CalFresh benefits. There is no change or reduction to SSI/SSP payments.
CalFresh benefits for one person range between $20 to $250. Benefits are based on your household size, income, and monthly expenses.
How to Double CalFresh Benefits with Market Match
Market Match is a nutrition incentive program offered at 130 farmers’ markets across the state of California.
The program doubles customers’ buying power when they spend their CalFresh EBT benefits at participating markets.
Market Match supports local farms and helps low-income shoppers afford more locally grown fruits and vegetables.
How to get Market Match Dollars
Getting market match dollars is easy.
Simply visit the market info booth, where staff will swipe your EBT card for the amount you choose.
Then the market manager provides $1 wooden tokens that can be used like cash at the farmers’ stalls to purchase many foods, plus seeds/plants that produce food in a garden.
With Market Match, you will also receive a bonus of free Market Match dollar tokens on top of that, to stretch your CalFresh dollars further.
This bonus matching benefit is available once per market day, all season long as funds permit.
What are the benefits of Market Match?
Market Match makes fresh produce affordable to low-income families.
Fruit and vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet, but they cost more per calorie than most processed foods.
Therefore families on a tight food budget are often unable to afford enough for optimum health.
Market Match makes food stamp dollars go farther, and it also helps level the playing field by making local and sustainable produce more accessible to people with limited income.
